Why Aldeburgh rocks (in a classical way)

Posted by Fleur

There is a great deal of excitement and anticipation in Aldeburgh at the moment.  We always love the pre-summer buzz but this year there is something extra special going on. This Friday (7 June) sees the start of Aldeburgh Music's 66th Aldeburgh Festival which this year will be celebrating the Britten Centenary year.  There is an online version of the festival brochure if you'd like to see what events are on in the coming weeks.

Perhaps the reason that everyone is being drawn into the excitement is because there's a very visual statement in honour of Britten - a stage which has been built on Aldeburgh beach for the outdoor performance of Peter Grimes - 'Grimes on the Beach'. It's been fascinating to watch the set come together, boats being put in place, lighting rigs going up. You can't get a latte in Munchies without bumping into some of the crew. So we wish all of the performers lots of luck and we'll keep our fingers crossed for dry weather!

And don't think that the Aldeburgh Festival is just about sitting and listening.  Walking shoes are required for the Punchdrunk Theatre performance of 'The Borough' which is sponsored by our sister shop O&C Butcher. It promises to be a theatrical journey around Aldeburgh, find out more about The Borough on the Aldeburgh Music website.

If you're unable to make it to Aldeburgh but would like to hear part of the Festival, the Festival Service will take place at Aldeburgh Church this Sunday (9th) and will be broadcast on BBC Radio Suffolk. The Archbishop of Canterbury will attend and choristers from Kings College Cambridge will perform some of Britten's work.

We know that we normally get more excited about shoes and handbags than opera but you just can't help get sucked in at the moment!  Although on that note we should add that the shop does have some particularly pretty things in at the moment - there are a few exampls below including iPanema FlipFlops, Birkenstock Madrid Sandals, Cara shoes, Victoria Plimsolls, bags from Seasalt and Nica and lots of lovely clothes from Jackpot, White Stuff, Nougat, Seasalt, Part Two and Sandwich.
